The best thing to do is simply walk and walk.

The structure of the village is typical of a Moorish village, with narrow, labyrinthine streets of white houses in which there is no shortage of colorful pots of geraniums and carnations. Perched on the mountain, you have to warm up your legs to climb the steep slopes and steep stairs, but that also guarantees you the peace of mind that most do not allow traffic.

It's extremely difficult not to come across flirty corners when strolling around Competa, but be sure to pass through the following streets and you'll have no choice but to take a few photos: Calle Laberinto, Calle Barranco de Grana, Calle San Sebastián, Calle San Antonio, Calle Toledo and Calle Plazoleta.

Places to visit:

  • Almijara Square and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.
  • The Paseo de las Tradiciones
  • The Plaza de la Vendimia and the Hanging Houses
  • The Museum of Popular Arts and Customs
  • Hermitages

The Wine Night of Competa
If you want to make your tourist visit to Competa coincide with a special moment, you should schedule it with the 15th of August. Every year the Noche del Vino de Competa is celebrated on this day to pay homage to Our Lady of the Assumption, the patron saint of the town.

Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, this festival of Competa has its roots in the farewell that the peasants used to do before going to the farmhouses to start with the harvest and not return home until mid-October. They sang and danced fandangos of Competa while the wine flowed everywhere.

Nowadays, the festival begins with the traditional treading of the grapes in the Plaza de la Vendimia accompanied by these fandangos and verdiales. Afterwards, a picnic lunch is served to locals and visitors, which usually consists of delicious migas, grapes, cod and local salad accompanied by its famous wine. You can also stop by the Flamenco Singing Festival or browse the stalls of the artisan market before listening to the opening speech and a long night of music and dance begins.
